7. Understanding SEO
YouTube has, one must admit, revolutionized the way videos are consumed in this day and age. You, literally, can start your own "TV Show" and be the master. This is a very exciting prospect for anyone who wants to become a YouTuber, but the game gets serious when you begin, because you then realize it may be simple, but not easy. Eventually it all boils down to whether you really wanted it in the first place.
In my opinion there is no niche or place in life where one can say, "This is saturated.". There are many people and it is only natural that there will be many people in many places. This is also true for YouTube, there are many genres or niches and there are many YouTubers and there are even more consumers. The participation many people does not then mean that the place is saturated, the so called "saturation" means there are many people interested, and that is a great thing, because even YouTubers are consumers.
So this brings us to the pressing question: how does one build a YouTube channel? This blog post will explain that to you.
These things are important:
Each active person in your mailing list is not only your blog post visitor, but your YouTube viewer as well. These are the people that will take your new video from zero to how ever many views withing the first day your video is up. This will help with the ranking of your video on YouTube and make you easier to find, and also give you much needed views and subscribers.

The Giant Video Search Engine
YouTube is a giant video search engine and your approach to it should be treated like you would treat any search engine. You can take YouTube as the video Google and your YouTube channel as the website. Be sure to read the post on SEO as you can apply that to YouTube in many ways.
Get these tools handy before we can discuss the process from the beginning to the end: Tubebuddy (an extension for Firefox) or VidIQ (the same extension, just for Google Chrome this time). This will help create solid video titles and descriptions.
Creating The Video
Now there are many niches on this planet or on YouTube and your video style will depend on your niche, but there are a few thoughts:
- Do not worry yourself about the quality of your video so much that you do not even start, go and look at many famous YouTubers and then check their first channel and early videos, the quality was not so good, but they did it anyway.
- You can create a video with just a picture and audio, this works so well with motivational videos or music. Even some internet marketers do this in the beginning.
- Work on your craft gradually and improve it over time and do not worry about mistakes, they will happen and you will get slapped in the face every now and then.
Uploading The Video
YouTube has an intuitive uploading wizard so you will easily see where to edit and what not. The extension that you will be using (either TubeBuddy or VidIQ) will give you information on what Keywords you can use. Take this a step further and open a new YouTube window and search for the title that you are more or less interested in. For example, if your video is about how to safely eat apples then you can search "safely eating apples", the video that will be at the top of the results in the one you must click on. Your tool will show you, while the video is playing (you can pause if you want to), what keywords they used and what hashtags and tags they used. These things are important:
- Make sure that you create a video title based on keywords that you have researched using your tool
- Make use of some of the keywords in your video description (2 or 3) in naturally sounding way and do not just put them there (do not keyword stuff)
- Make use of 3 hashtags at the end of your description based on your best keywords
- Make use of tags, fill up the tag section to the maximum number of tags YouTube allows you to use
- Always have a related blog post that you can take people to when they view your video and read your description
- Do not forget to ask people actively in your video to subscribe and join your mailing list, ask, ask, ask so that you get your answer. This is called "Call To Action".
This whole process will give a bit of an edge when it comes to your video being discovered by YouTube viewers, but it is not what will make you and big YouTuber.
Build Your Mailing List
I am assuming that you are ware of the previous blog posts and are aware of the importance of a mailing list, go to this post to remind yourself or inform yourself if you have not. Your mailing list is your greatest assets and in your video you must deliver quality content, this is more important that a quality video. If you deliver quality content you can offer something of value in exchange for someone's email at the end of your video.
What The Primary Goals Of Your Channel Be?
Your aim for your YouTube channel should be this:
- To get subscribers, comments and likes by asking for them
- To get people to visit your blog
- To get people to give you their email addresses
- To get people to buy your products
Note that I have not mentioned monetizing your channel using ads. That should come with you already moving and already making some money. The ads should not be your only source of YouTube income, they should be your crowning source of YouTube income, a way of saying "I have made it this far". The reason I am saying this is because it is so easy to become discouraged when you look at the daunting task of getting 1000 YouTube viewers, and even then you still have to get many views to earn a decent income, so do not put yourself in that painful box, take it from me.
Getting Your YouTube Subscribers
In the list of articles above there are a few articles that talk about social media. Make use of that, and every time you post a video make sure that you share it and encourage people to view and subscribe. Get everyone involved. Like I said before, build your mailing list, pay for if you have to and have the funds to do so.
You can also get 1000 subscribers by interacting with people in your niche, especially those in the same level as you. They will interested in your content anyway and you will be too, so just subscribe to them and ask them to subscribe to. This totally different from sub to subs since you everyone here is interested in what everyone has to say or present and everyone finds inspiration from everyone; it is a positive environment. These should be your best friends and your second best supporters, after your fans.
Some people will subscribe randomly from search results.
The most important thing: consistency
I recently lost my studio and cannot sustain my music channel. That does not mean I am not trying to find ways to do this. It is very important, why? because you have to consistent. Even now I am finding ways to make these blog posts happen because they have to happen whether I have my laptop with me or not. That is how important consistency is!
Try your best to keep the content coming and people will see that you are serious and will slowly grow fond of you. That is the crux of the game, really. The big YouTubers that you see today got there because they would not stop posting, creating, sharing, growing, they did this on a continuous basis.
That is why I always stress that you must go into the niche that you love, because that is the only way you find consistency. Like in a relationship with someone you truly love, through thick and thin.
